Language Academy

El Buzo Inglés is an unconventional and disruptive language academy. It offers full immersion in language learning through an award-winning educational model committed to sustainability. The academy’s interior design conveys values such as environmental awareness, marine conservation, and respect for natural resources.

Vitale designs a space that brings the brand universe to life—an inspiring and coherent environment rooted in the themes of diving, exploration, and ocean preservation. The immersive interior design is inspired by the marine world, interpreted through a vibrant chromatic palette where coral (the brand’s primary color) takes center stage alongside a range of ocean blues.

Renovation and Adaptation of the Language Academy

The 195 m² academy had been operating for several years under a franchise identity. Due to ongoing academic activity, the renovation had to be carried out swiftly during the holiday break. The intervention required agility, cost-efficiency, and sensitivity toward the existing structure.

Reception and Waiting Area Design

The spatial layout is organized around the reception area, which acts as the starting point for the circulation corridor leading to the classrooms. The waiting area and service desk are designed as bright, cheerful, and motivating spaces that open out to the exterior, featuring formal references to a ship’s deck. A structural column near the entrance houses the reprographics and server area. Painted in the iconic striped pattern of a lighthouse, it becomes a visual focal point and meeting spot, clearly visible from different angles within the space.

A Marine-Inspired Interior Design Concept

A series of round windows tinted in blue—reminiscent of classic nautical portholes—enliven the circulation zones and visually connect with the classrooms. This design move enhances the sense of space in classrooms without exterior windows and evokes the feeling of observing underwater learning pods.

A Calm and Focused Atmosphere in the Classroom

The inner classrooms represent various marine microcosms, each defined by its own color tone to create distinct, sensory-rich environments. Toned-down curtains combined with indirect lighting foster a calm atmosphere conducive to concentration. The workstations are illuminated by three large cylindrical pendant lamps designed specifically for the project. Inspired by the smokestacks of early 20th-century ocean liners, these elements reflect the academy’s bold identity—much like shipping companies used funnels to convey their brand.

Creative Design for the Children’s Classroom

In the exterior-facing classrooms, natural light enhances the academy’s identity. The children’s room is designed to resemble an aquarium, with colorful methacrylate jellyfish suspended from the ceiling. Overhead backlighting casts soft shadows, mimicking the gentle movement of jellyfish near the ocean surface. The academy’s chairs (Love model by Vondom) are made from recycled plastics sourced from the Mediterranean Sea, aligning the design with eco-conscious values.

Communication Strategy Through Spatial Design

The result is a fully immersive brand experience. The interior design communicates the academy’s personality and commitment to marine conservation in a clear, impactful way. It’s a space filled with meaningful cues for adults and sensory stimuli for children. The interior design not only reinforces the corporate strategy but also encourages a joyful, proactive, and engaged approach to learning.

Before and After

The location was already operating as an academy, but under a franchise brand. Most of the original elements were retained: ceilings, flooring, doors, exterior enclosures, and reception furniture. The intervention focused on fast, budget-friendly solutions such as painting, affordable curtains, custom-made lamps from PVC tubes, and simple signage.
